Training is a huge focus for us, and we take special pride in the success of graduates from our programs. Our accredited medical postgraduate programs in education are of the highest caliber, and all rank strongly within the CaRMS matching process. Our training programs in other non medical subspecialities are also highly regarded, and are accredited through their national specialty associations. Our graduate student program is available for mainly fundamental, translational and population based streams, the activities of which are coordinated within our research institute. What about research? Our research is focused through an association with the Southern Alberta Cancer Research Institute, which has been endorsed as one of only six research institutes in the Faculty of Medicine. This institute has over one hundred associate members, and approximately 80 full time members. It supports fundamental, translational, population based, clinical and health service streams; with laboratory facilities in the HRIC, Heritage and Tom Baker Cancer Centre buildings. We are proud of our achievements in research, the grant funding our scientists achieve, and the impact of the research we do. We also rank as one of the top accruers of patients to clinical trials in Canada.

We are a department that understands the critical importance of developing leaders, and connecting academics. Our mentorship program is blossoming in both the research and clinical streams; and even more emphasis will be placed on engaging with our faculty in the future.

Finally, it is only fitting to emphasize the important part that our clinical partner plays in our success. As we transition from the Alberta Cancer Board to being within the Alberta Health Services, we are confident that the great cancer care offered to patients in Southern Alberta will continue. We are a unique blend of medical, research and other clinical disciplines.
