Dr. Steve Robbins
Division Head

Division members recently moved into the new Health Research Innovation Centre (HRIC) after completion of $1.3 million in renovations. This building is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, creating an environment for optimal performance.

This strength of this division is evident by the significant scientific contributions of its members, strong publication records, successes in grant competitions, and ongoing recruitment. Three members hold Canada Research Chairs (Drs Robbins, Kim and Schriemer), one member holds the Alberta Cancer Foundation Chair in Brain Tumour Research (Dr. Cairncross), and one member holds the Engineered Air Chair in DNA Damage and Repair (Dr. Lees-Miller).

Strategic Plan

Our vision is "Freedom from cancer through excellence in research and training."

Our mission is "To create a community for innovative cancer research and training which is dedicated to achieving a cancer-free future".

Our goals and objectives are:

  • to establish and maintain sustainable core funding for research, business and technology infrastructure
  • to create a strengthened environment for team science between cancer investigators by bringing together researchers through collaborations and partnerships
  • to recruit and retain the best researchers and core facility leaders by creating an environment that supports and promotes their research activities

Education

The division offers an excellent environment for graduate training leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Graduate students obtain a broad foundation in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology through study of the diverse mechanisms of cancer pathophysiology. Students are given the opportunity to collaborate across disciplines with high calibre researchers, access cutting-edge equipment, attend seminars by world-class scientists, and present their work in weekly Work-in-Progress and Journal Club meetings. Postdoctoral Fellows in this division are mentored by ground-breaking researchers, while having access to superb facilities in a collaborative setting. Research opportunities are also provided for undergraduate and high school students.

Research

Division members are involved in a wide spectrum of scientific investigations from how aberrant molecular processes result in tumour formation to how existing and new therapeutic agents destroy cancer cells. These research efforts are key to understanding how cancer develops, grows and spreads.

Moreover, members use a team-based approach to access the latest advances in medicine and science to determine the most effective treatments, to understand cancer causation, to explain trends in cancer incidence and mortality, and to improve the scientific knowledge of all aspects of the cancer continuum.
