Prerequisite
Residents wishing to enter the Medical Oncology Program must have completed 3 years of core training in Internal Medicine (RCPSC approved).

Program Outline
The Department of Oncology at the University of Calgary is one of very few training programs to offer subspecialty training in Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Palliative Medicine and Psychosocial Oncology in Canada, thereby allowing a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach to oncology. The Medical Oncology training program at the University of Calgary offers Residents the opportunity to train in one of the best centres in Canada. With a large staff: learner ratio, Residents gain vast experience clinically, but are also exposed to a diverse range of research interests.

The Medical Oncology core curriculum program is perhaps one of the best in the country. The twice weekly sessions are attended by members of all Oncology training programs and offer a multidisciplinary approach to the teaching around cancer. In addition; each winter/spring a joint molecular cancer biology/clinical trail course is offered. Five months of elective time is available to actively pursue selected areas of interest, including research.

Research
The Southern Alberta Cancer Research Center offers an outstanding opportunity to be involved in basic and translational research.

Selection Criteria
Three to four residents are accepted into the program each year. Applications for training must be received by June 30 of the year prior to commencement of training. The following are required for application to the program:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Covering Letter describing why you wish to pursue a career in Medical Oncology and why you would be interested in training in Calgary
  • 3 Letters of Reference

Candidates will participate in a structured telephone interview in August. Successful candidates will be offered personal interviews in Calgary in late August or early September.
