Strategic
Plan
1. The division will continue its leadership role as a specialized
reference laboratory for development and provision of novel clinical
assays needed for improving therapy selection and diagnosis for
cancer patients.
2. THe division is developing a plan in conjunction with tumor
group leaders to improve patient safety by increasing the number
of timely reviews by expert pathologists.
3. In conjunction with Alberta Health Services, the cancer laboratories
are working on a plan to formalize cancer synoptic pathology reporting
throughout Alberta
Education
Members teach the basics of cancer pathology in undergraduate
biology courses, conduct small groups and lectures within the
medical curriculum and interact with fellows and residents from
many different specialties.
The
pathology division has an active program in research education.
There were 4 summer students conducting research studies. These
students successfully received several awards including AHFMR
studentships and CIHR.
The
Pathology division has been invited to join the University of
Toronto and University of British Columbia's CIHR training program.
The
future goal will be to create a formal fellowship in molecular
or subspecialty cancer pathology at TBCC.
Research
The Members of the division have published 29 peer reviewed papers
and 15 peer reviewed abstracts. There has been over 3 million
in direct new funding received. New equipment in pharmacokinetics
and histology has greatly expanded the research and clinical capacity
of the division. The appointment of Dr Magliocco to RTOG as well
as the designation of the translational lab as a core RTOG facility
will greatly enhance opportunities for TBCC investigators to access
pivotal clinical trials collections.
Other
The Division recruited 2 new members last year, Dr Jennifer Chan
and Dr Tarek Bismar. Both are talented translational clinical
scientists. Dr Chan is a neuropathologist and Dr Bismar has expertise
in prostate cancer. Dr Magliocco was appointed Chairman of the
pathology committee of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG).
Dr Magliocco has also been appointed to the steering committee
of the National Cancer in Washington DC to oversee development
of fruitful interactions between the tumor banks of the major
international cooperative trials groups.
The
Clinical laboratory was inspected by the CPSA and received full
accreditation.
